Systemize Your Health & Fitness

League of Wildness,

Do you have a repeatable system for your health and fitness?

My perception is that often times a whack-a-mole type of strategy is applied to our health and fitness.

  • We spend a bit too much time on the couch and then join a super intense bootcamp to fast-track the re-fitnessing process.
  • We then "tweak something" and have to go to a PT and do corrective exercise.
  • Then, we get sick and have to take 2 weeks off.
  • Rinse & repeat.

Systemization is something I definitely struggle with. If I take an examined view of my behavior, I think I'm basically able to out-discipline my lack of systemization. I do the work to get done what needs to get done - but there is CLEARLY a better way.

The whole point of a system is to have a repeatable process.

I almost want to say a system is the same as a habit, but I do think there is a distinction.

To me a habit is binary - yes/no, true/false, completed/not finished. However, habits lack the repeatability of a system.

A system is the entire process that leads to a habit getting done or not done.

It's making your lunch every night at 8pm so you do not buy junk from the convenience store.
It's having your workout clothes ready so there is one less barrier to starting.
It's taking the time to write out a plan and then obeying the plan.

The curse of entrepreneurship is that you are your own boss and there is no one checking in on you to keep you accountable.

The biggest benefit of doing this business course has been the accountability. Even though no one is really checking in on me - I paid for the course and I feel pressure (in a good way) to get the work done.

It's the same for your health and fitness.
Do you have a system that you are accountable to?

Remember - you don't have to be extreme - just be consistent.

This could be as simple as a 10-minute walk every morning or making sure you buy enough eggs and avocados every Sunday to last you for the week.

You have to make these systems NON-NEGOTIABLE.

Don't just create the system - create a system to keep you accountable to the system. Be your own boss and be a benevolent hard-ass.

A system does not have to be fancy - at all. In fact, it should be as simple as possible to allow for the highest probability of repeatability.

Here's what has been working for me:

  1. Every evening I write out the top 3-5 things I need to get done on a standard size post it note.
  2. I do those things first and cross them out.
  3. Anything undone gets the first spot for the next day.
  4. Rinse & repeat.

Identify. Act. Repeat.

Have a wild week and start systematizing,
